Tesla's sales in China plunged in April from March, but the numbers have rebounded sharply in May as production capacity has recovered.

The China-made Model Y is currently powered by ternary lithium batteries supplied by LG. Lower-cost LFP batteries would mean a lower price for the model in China.

The Tesla Model Y came in second with 12,728 sales, and the Model 3 was third with 9,208 sales.

Tesla has received a complaint from one of the first owners of China-made Model Y, who wants a new car after experiencing various problems with the vehicle.

The deliveries consisted of 1,660 ES8s, a 6-seater and 7-seater flagship premium smart electric SUV, 2,720 ES6s, a 5-seater high-performance premium smart electric SUV, and 2,845 EC6s, a 5-seater premium electric coupe SUV.

Tesla says its move regarding the Model Y in China is not a price cut, but the first sale of the China-made version, according to Beijing News.

Tesla said on Weibo on Monday that the first China-made Model Y deliveries began today in cities including Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuhan, Hefei, Wenzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, and Ningbo.

Tesla China's website shows that if consumers order the Model Y now, the long-range version is expected to be delivered in the second quarter of this year.

Previously there were rumors that China-made Model Y orders have reached 100,000. Tesla said on January 5 that the data was unreliable and that no Model Y orders had been tallied.

Assuming gross margin remains above 25%, the price is expected to drop 23% to around RMB 260,000, they say.
