BYD will sell cars in Japan through a dealer network rather than directly operated stores, because the former is the way Japanese consumers are most familiar with, an executive said.

This is one of the new overseas markets that BYD has intensively announced in the last month that it has entered. Its local counterpart, Nio, will also enter Denmark this year.

BYD has previously brought the Atto 3 to several markets including Australia, Singapore, Japan and Costa Rica.

The Model Y is powered by BYD batteries with a capacity of 55-kilowatt hours and a range of 440 kilometers, according to a German media report.

BYD has reached a good level of vehicle registrations in Norway, while Nio vehicle registrations are growing at the fastest rate among Chinese brands, says CITIC Securities.

Thailand has become the latest in a long line of countries where BYD has announced the entry of its passenger car business in the past month.

The model, known as the Yuan Plus in China, is BYD's first model built for the global market.

BYD has appointed Shlomo Motors as its national dealer in Israel, with the first two showrooms set to open in September.

In October, a number of pioneering stores in Sweden and Germany will be opened, with the first vehicles expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter.

BYD's new energy passenger car offerings are expected to go on sale and be delivered in Europe in the fourth quarter, the company said, without revealing exactly which models.
