This is part of Tesla's global layoff plan, a local media report says.

Tesla aims to raise production at the Shanghai plant to a new record high by the end of July to get closer to its goal of producing 22,000 cars a week, according to Reuters.

According to Chinese policy, NEVs sold to corporate customers need to reach 20,000 kilometers of driving range within 2 years or they will not receive the purchase subsidy.

Tesla is currently offering two versions of the Model 3 in China as well as three versions of the Model Y. The pricing and expected delivery dates for all models except the Model Y Long Range remain unchanged.

The first Tesla model to use BYD batteries will be the Model Y, with mass supply set to happen as early as next year, according to local media.

Previously BYD has made a strategic investment in another Chinese lithium producer, Chengxin Lithium, and signed a lithium procurement contract with it.

Tesla's Shanghai plant produced 33,544 vehicles in May, with 22,340 of those vehicles being exported.

This comes seven months after Tesla installed its 30,000th Supercharger worldwide.

Since production resumed in late April, Tesla Giga Shanghai has produced a cumulative total of more than 40,000 vehicles.
