Blade Battery

Media reports that BYD will supply "blade battery" to Tesla are true, and the first model could be the Model Y, Chinese technology website mydrivers.com said Friday, citing an unnamed BYD insider.

The blade battery, a power cell that BYD claims won't catch fire, was first used in its flagship Han EV model. It is now available in all BYD's all-electric models.

The first and second phases of BYD's power battery production base will have a combined annual capacity of 35GWh at full capacity.

Wang Chuanfu, BYD's founder and chairman of the board, said the company's electric vehicle models will all use blade batteries, and all batteries will be tested with pinpricks.

The Yuan Pro's front offers two looks, one like the SUV version of the Han EV with a closed front grille and a silver trim strip with the Chinese character "Yuan" printed on the chrome.

BYD unveiled the blade battery in March 2020 and unveiled Han, BYD's flagship new energy sedan that was the first to carry the blade battery, in July.

BYD will supply its blade batteries to FAW and Hongqi and the batteries will be installed in the two companies' vehicles in the second half of the year, local media report said.

As its blade battery production base, the main production plant of BYD's Ningxiang power battery production base project has been topped off, local media reported, adding the project is expected to start the installation of equipment before October 15, and the first production line's trial production will begin before December 15.

In the history of hybrid and pure electric vehicles, lithium iron phosphate batteries were once considered by manufacturers to be the most suitable choice.
