On July 5, 2022, Nio announced that it reached the 10 millionth battery swap service milestone, as the service has become the preferred method of replenishment for its owners over the past four years.

Nio completed its first battery swap station in Shenzhen on May 20, 2018. Nio owners were skeptical in the early days of battery swap, but as they have experienced the convenience of the service over the past few years, battery swap has gained widespread acceptance.

It took Nio 29 months to see its battery swap service reach its first 1 million, 20 months from the 1 millionth to the 9 millionth, and only 1 month from the 9 millionth to the 10 millionth.

The company officially unveiled its third-generation battery swap station at the Nio Day 2022 event in Hefei, Anhui province on December 24, capable of storing up to 21 battery packs, up from 13 in its previous generation and 5 in the first generation of the facility.

The third-generation battery swap station increases the daily service capacity of a single station to 408, a 30 percent increase over the second generation.

Nio's third-generation battery swap station will be available starting in March 2023, the company said at the time.
