BYD beat Panasonic to third place with 11.9 percent market share in January-February, while the latter ranked fourth with 10.8 percent share.

The project has a total investment of RMB 13.5 billion ($2.14 billion) and is designed to have a total capacity of 45 GWh.

BYD's blade battery could enter India by being fitted in Toyota models, and the company is already recruiting for business related to it, local media said.

BYD's batteries for Tesla will begin mass production in March, and Tesla cars with the blade batteries are expected to hit the market in the second quarter, the latest rumor says.

BYD and FAW Group have established a joint venture with a registered capital of RMB 1 billion, with a 51 percent and 49 percent stake, respectively.

In December alone, the price of battery-grade lithium carbonate rose by 40 percent.

BYD's reasoning is that the raw materials for lithium batteries have been rising due to market changes, power restrictions and production limitations.

Daiwa Securities believes that 10 GWh of installed battery capacity could translate into close to 200,000 vehicles, which could be supplied not only to the Shanghai plant, but also to factories in Berlin or the US.
