Major electric vehicle (EV) makers generally saw a dip in insurance registrations in China last week, as deliveries are typically lower at the beginning of the month and a public holiday took its toll.
For the week of April 28 to May 4 -- week 18 of 2025 -- Nio (NYSE: NIO) branded vehicles saw insurance registrations of 3,470 units in China, down 46.62 percent from 6,500 units the week before, according to figures shared by several auto industry watchers on Weibo today.
For the past 2 years, Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) has typically shared the previous week's sales figures for major EV makers in rankings every Tuesday. It has stopped doing that as a response to a March 18 call from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).
Nio's sub-brand Onvo had 1,280 insurance registrations last week, down 12.93 percent from 1,470 the previous week.
Nio's other sub-brand Firefly had 350 insurance registrations last week, the first time Firefly's insurance registration figures have been available.
Firefly launched its first model on April 19 and deliveries began on April 29.
Nio Inc, which includes the Nio, Onvo, and Firefly brands, had 5,100 insurance registrations in China last week, down 36.01 percent from 7,970 the week before.
Vehicle deliveries were negatively impacted by the May 1-5 Labor Day holiday in China.
Nio Inc delivered 23,900 vehicles in April, its second highest ever, behind last December's 31,138 units, according to figures it announced on May 1.
The Nio brand delivered 19,269 vehicles in April, up 23.36 percent year-on-year and up 88.56 percent from March.
Onvo delivered 4,400 vehicles in April, down 8.71 percent from 4,820 in March.
Firefly delivered 231 vehicles in April. Its effective delivery days in April were April 29 and April 30.
Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) had 5,550 insurance registrations last week, down 22.49 percent from 7,160 the week before.
The EV maker delivered 35,045 vehicles in April, the second highest on record behind December 2024's 36,695 units.
This is the sixth consecutive month that Xpeng's monthly deliveries have been above the 30,000 mark, an increase of 273.10 percent year-on-year and up 5.54 percent from March.
Xpeng will report its first quarter 2025 financial results on May 21. It delivered 94,008 vehicles in the first quarter, exceeding the upper end of its guidance range.
Li Auto had 11,400 insurance registrations last week, up 32.56 percent from 8,600 the previous week, and was one of the few to see an uptick.
The company began pre-sales of the updated Li L6 SUV (sport utility vehicle), Li Mega MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) on April 23, the first day of the 2025 Shanghai auto show, and will begin taking firm orders on May 8.
Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) delivered 33,939 vehicles in April, up 31.61 percent from 25,787 a year ago, but down 7.46 percent from 36,674 in March.
Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) had 7,290 insurance registrations in China last week, down 29.09 percent from 10,280 in the previous week.
Tesla sold 74,127 vehicles in China's domestic market in March, up 18.80 percent from 62,398 in the same month last year and up 176.83 percent from 26,777 in February, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
Tesla China's wholesale sales figures for April, including exports, are expected to be known later this week.
BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) branded vehicles saw 59,310 insurance registrations last week, down 4.65 percent from 62,200 the week before.
The company sold 380,089 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in April, up 21.34 percent year-on-year and up 0.71 percent from March.
Xiaomi (HKG: 1810, OTCMKTS: XIACY) had 5,690 insurance registrations last week, down 18.71 percent from 7,000 the week before.
The company delivered more than 28,000 vehicles in April, the seventh consecutive month it has seen monthly deliveries of more than 20,000 units, Xiaomi's car-making arm, Xiaomi EV, announced on May 1 on Weibo.
The Zeekr (NYSE: ZK) brand saw 3,080 insurance registrations last week, down 12.75 percent from 3,530 the week before.
The brand delivered 13,727 vehicles in April, down 14.68 percent from the previous year and down 10.99 percent from March.
Including Lynk & Co deliveries, the Zeekr Group delivered 41,316 vehicles in April, up 1.48 percent from 40,715 in March.
Leapmotor (HKG: 9863) had 6,230 insurance registrations last week, down 32.06 percent from 9,170 the week before.
The company delivered 41,039 vehicles in April, its second highest ever behind December 2024's 42,517 units.
That monthly deliveries were up 173.50 percent from 15,005 a year ago and up 10.63 percent from 37,095 in March.
Yesterday, Leapmotor said it got orders for over 18,000 units for the May 1 - 5 Labor Day holiday.
Aito -- a brand jointly created by Huawei and Seres Group -- registered 6,680 insurance registrations last week, down 2.48 percent from 6,850 the week before.
