Smart, the premium electric vehicle (EV) maker jointly established by Mercedes-Benz and Geely, announced the start of pre-sales for the Smart #6 EHD on April 24, the first day of the Beijing Auto Show, with prices starting at 189,900 yuan ($27,780).
The move marks a significant step for Smart as it transitions from classic compact cars to the premium mid-size sedan market.
The Smart #6 EHD is the brand's largest model to date. Tailored specifically for the Chinese market, it will officially go on sale in June.
Chinese customers who place a 999-yuan deposit for the Smart #6 EHD now will receive a 3,000-yuan discount on their final payment.
The vehicle is mid-size sedan, measuring 4,906 millimeters in length, 1,922 mm in width, and 1,508 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,926 mm.
The larger dimensions are designed to meet Chinese consumers' preference for spacious interiors, incorporating local market insights.
Powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged plug-in hybrid system, the Smart #6 EHD delivers a maximum output of 320 kilowatts (429 horsepower) and can accelerate from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 6.7 seconds.
Under the CLTC standard, it has a maximum pure electric range of 285 kilometers. When fully fueled and fully charged, its combined range reaches 1,810 kilometers.
The Smart #6 EHD comes standard with a roof-mounted LiDAR, supporting urban navigate-on-autopilot functions that enable various advanced driver-assistance features, including automated parking and intelligent obstacle avoidance.
As a crucial step in Smart's push into the higher-end market, the introduction of the Smart #6 EHD will further enrich its product lineup and help the brand achieve broader global market coverage.
The brand also showcased the Smart Concept #2 at the auto show today, signaling an upcoming reinvention of its iconic two-seater urban commuter car.
"Today, we are seeing two defining shifts in the market: compact cars are steadily moving toward premiumization, while larger vehicles are being reshaped by a growing demand for true personalization. This is exactly where smart excels," said Tong Xiangbei, global CEO of Smart.
The production version of the Smart Concept #2 will make its global debut at the Paris Motor Show in October.
The new car will offer a pure electric range of nearly 300 kilometers and support DC fast charging, capable of replenishing the battery from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes.
Ahead of the auto show, Smart previewed both models at an event on April 22 to build momentum.
