- Nio showcased the Nio ES6, Onvo L60 and Firefly at a police equipment expo in Beijing last week.
- This is the first time Nio has participated in an international police equipment show.
Nio (NYSE: NIO) showcased several models at a police equipment expo, as it explores a new market.
The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker displayed the Nio ES6 SUV (sport utility vehicle), the Onvo L60 SUV, and the first model of Firefly at the 12th China International Exhibition on Police Equipment last week, according to an announcement on Saturday.
The expo, held May 14-17 at the Shougang Convention and Exhibition Center in Beijing, is the only police equipment show hosted by China's Ministry of Public Security, according to its official website.
This marks Nio's expansion beyond the high-end electric passenger car market into the police, government and specialty vehicle segments, according to the company's announcement.
It is the first time Nio has participated in an international police equipment show, and the first time battery swap-enabled models have appeared at such a show.
The battery swap-enabled Nio ES6 significantly improves the energy replenishment efficiency of police vehicles and ensures all-day working capability, Nio said in the announcement posted on the Nio App.
The Onvo L60 will be ideal for police patrols with its cost-effective, low-cost-of-use and 900 V architecture, the announcement said.
Firefly, with its compact body and intelligent configuration, is particularly suitable for urban patrol and community policing scenarios, Nio said.
Nio will next further deepen its cooperation with government and police departments to promote the application of smart EVs in the public sector, it said.
In November 2021, Nio delivered eight ES6s to the Laoshan district in Qingdao, Shandong province, as police vehicles, and held a delivery ceremony for it.
After that, however, Nio has not announced any new developments in its police vehicle market.
China is supporting the new energy vehicle (NEV) industry and encouraging government agencies to buy local NEVs.
An announcement published on the website of the National Government Offices Administration (NGOA) last October said that the central government and state agencies and their affiliated organizations should take the lead in using domestically produced NEVs when equipping and updating their official vehicles.
Recently, China's State Council issued a new regulation saying that government departments should use locally produced vehicles and prioritize the use of NEVs when procuring official vehicles centrally, according to a report in People's Daily earlier today.
