BYD Han to be first NEV in China equipped with Bosch's Integrated Power Brake system

Arlene HuangFebruary 19, 2021

BYD Han will be the first new energy vehicle in China to be equipped with Bosch's intelligent Integrated Power Brake (IPB) system, and will be the first in the world to be equipped with the Comfort Stop (CST) based on the IPB system, the Chinese automaker said.

The IPB is an electronically controlled brake system that is more responsive and more precisely controlled than the traditional vacuum-assisted pump brake system, BYD said.

The Han model can develop more functions with this set of intelligent electronically controlled braking systems. For example, when IPB is combined with new energy vehicles, it can significantly enhance the efficiency of braking energy recovery.

IPB integrates with the ESP system, which means that the IPB system is lighter in weight and takes up less space in the vehicle than a non-integrated brake system.

The CST allows the braking system to automatically and intelligently adjust the braking force to avoid "nodding" when braking, providing a smoother and more comfortable experience for the driver and passengers.

However, the CST will be withdrawn when the vehicle tends to destabilize in an emergency or when the automatic emergency braking function is triggered.

The IPB system also provides an extended range. When braking, the IPB works with the drive system of model Han to first use the motor for energy recovery, converting kinetic energy into electrical energy and storing it in the power battery.

Once the braking effect of the motor cannot meet the demand of the braking system, the IPB will quickly release the brake fluid and activate the brake calipers for braking.

This process allows Han to recover 10% more energy when braking. For the user, the range is improved and the wear and tear of the brake pads are reduced.

Currently, BYD and Bosch's R&D team is conducting rigorous testing and tuning of the IPB-equipped Han in Yakeshi, one of the coldest cities in China in winter.

The winter temperature there can be as low as -45.5℃, with the low traction road surface and cold environment that is not the user's daily use scenario, which puts severe requirements on the braking performance, stability and reliability of the vehicle.

The commissioning will last for several months, through repeated testing and tuning, the IPB system will be highly compatible with the performance of the Han.
