China's NEV penetration at retail stood at 50.84 percent in July, the first time in history it has exceeded 50 percent, according to preliminary CPCA data.

July was traditionally a slow production season, while a lack of demand and extreme weather in some regions led to overall weakness in the auto market, according to the CPCA.

China's retail penetration of NEVs stood at 51.86 percent in the July 1-28 period, and 43.05 percent year-to-date.

China's passenger car retail sales fell in July from June, but the NEV market was bolstered by fast-growing sales of hybrid models, the CPCA said.
