China's lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery installed base surpassed ternary batteries for the first time this year in July, and that lead widened in August.

The popularity of micro cars in China, including the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, has been rewarding for one power battery supplier.

The installed base of lithium iron phosphate batteries rose 235.5 percent in July, compared with a 67.5 percent increase for ternary batteries.

The total output value of the lithium-ion battery industry in the first half of the year exceeded RMB 240 billion ($37.1 billion), and total exports were RMB 74.3 billion, an increase of nearly 70 percent year-over-year.

Chinese battery giant CATL ranked No. 1 in the global power battery market with a 29.9 percent market share in the first half of the year, according to SNE Research.

For comparison, China shipped 124,000 tons of LFP cathode materials in 2020, up 41 percent year-over-year, with market size of about RMB 4.5 billion.

It is worth noting that about 74.42 percent of the installed capacity of lithium iron phosphate batteries came from the passenger car market, at 16.76 GWh.

LG Energy Solution's installed base in May rose 370 percent year-over-year to 5.7 GWh.

In June, CATL had the highest installed capacity of 5.44 GWh, with a market share of 49.1 percent.
