China delivered the world's largest car carrier, as its shipbuilding industry rises in tandem with the rapid boom of electric vehicles (EVs).
State-owned Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited (GSI) delivered the car carrier, which has a maximum single-ship capacity of 10,800 vehicles, to South Korea's HMM in Nansha, Guangzhou, on Tuesday, according to a report by China's official Xinhua News Agency.
Designed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute under the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), the massive vessel has a total length of 230 meters and a beam of 40 meters. GSI is a subsidiary of CSSC.
It features a designed draft of 10.5 meters, a designed speed of 19 knots, and an LNG/fuel dual-fuel propulsion system, meeting the International Maritime Organization's Tier III emission standards.
The vessel boasts a massive internal space with 14 vehicle decks, enabling it to flexibly load a diverse range of models, including EVs, hydrogen-powered vehicles, and heavy-duty trucks.
Calculated based on a standard car length of five meters, the loaded vehicles would stretch over 50 kilometers if lined up end-to-end, the report noted.
The delivery of the record-breaking mega-ship comes as Chinese automakers expand their overseas fleets to support the growing international sales of EVs.
In April 2025, the BYD Shenzhen car carrier was put into operation and set sail. With 9,200 standard parking spaces, it was the world's largest car carrier by capacity at the time.
In addition to the BYD Shenzhen, BYD has two other vessels with a 9,200-vehicle capacity — the BYD Changsha and the BYD Xi'an.
