Onvo, a sub-brand of Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO), is expected to launch the L80 in the first half of next year after postponing the launch of the five-seat electric SUV (sport utility vehicle).

William Li, founder, chairman, and CEO of the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, disclosed the plan during a recent communication, according to a video shared today by automotive blogger @德卤爱开车. The blogger did not specify when or where the communication took place.

The Onvo L80 was originally scheduled for launch this year, but due to strong sales of the L90, it was postponed, Li said in the video.

"Their parts are shared, so delivering the L80 would mean fewer L90 deliveries," he said.

"The L80 will be launched in the first half of next year. Those wanting a large five-seater can wait. Or you can buy a seven-seater (L90) now," Li added.

Onvo's current lineup -- the L60 and L90, plus the upcoming L80 -- can cover over 90 percent of family user groups, he noted.

Nio launched the Onvo brand on May 15, 2024, and officially rolled out the brand's first model, the L60 midsize five-seat SUV, on September 19 last year to compete with models including Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model Y.

On September 19 this year, marking the L60's one-year anniversary, Onvo launched a facelifted version of the SUV, with deliveries commencing late last month.

Onvo's second model, the L90 large SUV, was launched on July 31, with deliveries starting the following day on August 1.

Available in six- and seven-seat configurations, the L90 has delivered over 10,000 units in each of the past three months, making it one of Nio Inc's best-performing models.

Nio had originally planned to launch the L80 five-seat SUV in the fourth quarter of this year, a plan first announced at the 2025 Shanghai auto show in late April.

However, the L90's strong popularity has strained Nio's production capacity, particularly battery packs.

During the second-quarter earnings call on September 2, Li said that the L80 would not launch this year due to factory capacity constraints.

The company will release its third-quarter 2025 earnings report on November 25, with the accompanying call expected to reveal more details about next year's product roadmap.

The L80 appeared in a regulatory catalog from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in June, in preparation for its market launch. The SUV is essentially a five-seat version of the L90, according to the catalog.

Onvo has filed for a specification change for the L90, adding the L80 badge to the rear.
