Nio (NYSE: NIO) sub-brand Onvo's third model, the L80, is actually a five-seat version of the upcoming L90, according to the latest regulatory filing.

Onvo has filed for specification changes to the L90, altering the seating layout from the original six-seat configuration to a 6/5/7-seat layout, according to a catalog published today by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

The L90's rear badge now includes the L80 option, indicating that the L90 and L80 are essentially different seating layout variants of the same model.

The L90 is Onvo's flagship SUV (sport utility vehicle), featuring 6-seat and 7-seat configurations, and made its debut at the 2025 Shanghai auto show in April.

The L80 is a five-seat space champion based on a native electric architecture, set to officially launch in the fourth quarter of 2025, Eric Yu, Nio's assistant vice president and Onvo product head, said on Weibo today.

The L90 is the three-row seating space champion and will be launched in the third quarter, Yu said.

Onvo launched its first model, the L60, on September 19, 2024, with deliveries beginning on September 28.

The L60 targets the mass market, though its pricing remains in the mid-to-high-end range, with a starting price of RMB 206,900 ($28,840).

The L80 and L90 differ only in seating layout, meaning they will share the majority of components and R&D resources -- a critical consideration for cash-strapped Nio.

The company reported a net loss of RMB 6.75 billion in the first quarter, a year-on-year increase of 30.19 percent, though this represents a 5.08 percent decrease from the fourth quarter of 2024, according to its earnings report.

Nio aims for its three Onvo models to achieve monthly sales of 25,000 units in the fourth quarter, according to the company's founder, chairman, and CEO William Li during an earnings call on June 3.
