Leapmotor launches updated C16 SUV with lower prices

Leapmotor (HKG: 9863) has launched the updated C16 SUV (sport utility vehicle), adding five-seat options and lowering the price to better compete in an increasingly competitive market.

The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker backed by Stellantis NV (NYSE: STLA) officially launched the 2026 C16 today, with a starting price of RMB 151,800 ($21,130), lower than the previous generation's RMB 155,800 and also lower than the RMB 169,800 pre-sales price announced earlier this month.

Leapmotor offers eight variants of the 2026 C16, including four extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants and four battery electric vehicle (BEV) variants.

The starting prices for the four EREV variants are RMB 151,800, RMB 161,800, RMB 168,800, and RMB 171,800, respectively.

The starting prices for the four BEV variants are RMB 161,800, RMB 171,800, RMB 178,800, and RMB 181,800, respectively.

The EREV variant priced at RMB 168,800 and the BEV variant priced at RMB 178,800 are five-seat versions, while the remaining variants are six-seat versions.

The vehicle measures 4,915 mm in length, 1,905 mm in width, and 1,770 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,825 mm, unchanged from the previous generation.

The 2026 C16 EREV is equipped with a 1.5-liter engine and a rear motor with a maximum power output of 170 kW and a maximum torque of 320 Nm.

The EREV variants can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in as little as 8.46 seconds and support a top speed of 170 km/h.

The updated C16 EREV offers lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack options with capacities of 28.4 kWh and 38.7 kWh, with CLTC pure electric ranges of 200 km and 280 km, respectively. When fully fueled and charged, the combined range is 1,095 km and 1,150 km, respectively.

The BEV variants are equipped with a rear motor with a maximum power output of 220 kW and a maximum torque of 360 Nm, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in as little as 6.37 seconds. These variants support a top speed of 190 km/h.

The updated C16 BEV has LFP battery packs with capacities of 74.9 kWh and 81.9 kWh, offering CLTC ranges of 580 km and 630 km, respectively.

C16 was initially launched on June 28, 2024, with only six-seat versions available. In January this year, Leapmotor added two six-seat BEV variants to the model to cater to potential customers seeking longer range.

Leapmotor delivered 45,067 vehicles in May, representing a year-on-year increase of 148.10 percent and a month-on-month increase of 9.82 percent, according to data released on June 1.

It delivered 173,658 vehicles from January to May, up 160.83 percent year-on-year.

C16 delivered 4,340 units in May, accounting for 9.6 percent of Leapmotor's monthly deliveries, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
