China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales continued to grow in May, hitting a year-to-date high.
In May, China's NEV sales reached 1,307,000 units, up 36.9 percent year-on-year and up 6.61 percent month-on-month, according to data released today by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).
The NEV sales figures released by CAAM represent wholesale sales by automakers, including sales within China and exports to overseas markets. NEVs include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel cell vehicles.
NEV sales in May saw a return to month-on-month growth after a 0.89 percent sequential decline in April.
BEV sales in May reached 834,000 units, up 43.1 percent year-on-year and up 1.46 percent month-on-month.
PHEV sales in May reached 473,000 units, up 27.3 percent year-on-year and up 17.37 percent month-on-month.
Total vehicle sales in May reached 2.686 million units, up 11.2 percent year-on-year and up 3.7 percent month-on-month.
This means that the NEV penetration rate in May was 48.7 percent, higher than the 39.5 percent in the same period last year and the 47.3 percent in April.
Excluding exports, domestic NEV sales in May reached 1,095,000 units, up 27.9 percent year-on-year and up 6.8 percent month-on-month.
In May, 551,000 vehicles were exported from China, up 14.5 percent year-on-year and up 6.6 percent month-on-month.
Of these, NEV exports reached a record 212,000 units, up 120 percent year-on-year and up 6.1 percent month-on-month.
In May, China exported 138,000 BEVs, up 79.8 percent year-on-year, but down 1.6 percent from April.
In May, PHEV exports reached 74,000 units, up 240 percent year-on-year and up 24 percent from April.
