Some models from Nio (NYSE: NIO) and Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) have been included in a Chinese government campaign aimed at promoting electric vehicle (EV) sales in rural areas.

Five government departments, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, issued a joint announcement yesterday regarding the 2025 new energy vehicle (NEV) rural promotion campaign, aimed at boosting EV adoption in China's rural areas.

The announcement included a list of eligible models, comprising 124 vehicles, up from 99 last year.

The move aims to encourage automakers to diversify their product offerings, improve service standards, and expand NEV consumption in rural areas, the announcement said.

Four of Nio's main models -- the ES6 SUV (sport utility vehicle), EC6 coupe SUV, ET5 sedan, and ET5T wagon -- are included, marking the first time Nio models have been selected since the program began in 2020.

Nio's sub-brand Onvo's sole model, the L60, is also included. The SUV model was launched in September 2024.

The Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV produced at Tesla's Shanghai factory are also on the list, marking the first time the US EV maker has been included in the program.

Li Auto's (NASDAQ: LI) lowest-priced Li L6 SUV is also on the list, marking the company's first inclusion.

Xpeng's (NYSE: XPEV) Mona M03 sedan, P7+ sedan, G6 SUV, and G9 SUV are also on the latest list.

Xpeng first appeared on the list in 2023 with two models: the G3i SUV and P5 sedan. In the 2024 list, Xpeng's models are the P5 sedan and G6 SUV.

BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has 11 models on the latest list, primarily due to its extensive lineup of models in the affordable market segment.

Out of the total 99 models in 2024, BYD accounted for 17.

In its May update on four models, Nio's new strategy avoided additional costs caused by material waste, according to a local media report.
