Nio (NYSE: NIO) is recruiting pioneering testers for its NOMI GPT, a virtual voice assistant that incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) technology, in the hope that AI will improve the passenger-vehicle conversation experience.
The electric vehicle (EV) maker said in a statement on its mobile app today that it has started recruiting beta testers for the next-generation, large-model-based NOMI GPT, with an initial slot of 600.
The latest version of NOMI has gone through 132 version iterations and brought more than 2,000 features to users, according to the company.
With large model technology, NOMI can be better integrated with the vehicle experience, Nio's statement said.
The AI large model empowers NOMI with deeper emotional expression and makes it smarter, the company said.
The launch of NOMI GPT will not only dramatically improve NOMI's intelligence, but also marks a full step into a new era of AI large models for Nio's smart cockpit, it said.
Nio said it welcomes applications from people who have an in-depth understanding of AI technology, like to give feedback, or have professional experience in reviewing.
The deadline for the application is March 12 at 12 pm Beijing Time. Applicants will need to complete an online training session to receive the beta version of the software.
GPT refers to Generative Pre-trained Transformer, which essentially solves for the probability of the next word appearing, sampling and generating a word from a probability distribution with each call.
As ChatGPT has become a hot topic around the world, a number of Chinese tech giants have announced their research progress in the field, and Nio applied for trademarks on GPT in May 2023, including NOMI GPT and Knowme GPT.
Nio unveiled NOMI in 2017 when it released its first production vehicle, the ES8, taking the acronym from the English word Know Me.
Owners of Nio vehicles can use voice commands to have NOMI perform tasks including playing music, navigating, making phone calls, taking photos, and finding battery swap stations.
Nio will rely on the vehicle's computing power to launch NOMI GPT based on AI large model, which will be able to add to the competitiveness of its existing products, its founder, chairman, and CEO, William Li, said in a March 5 analyst call following the company's earnings announcement.
Nio began deliveries of the updated ES8, EC7, ES6, EC6, and ET5 Touring in several Chinese cities on March 8.
The 2024 Nio models feature a new central computing platform, ADAM, powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon's fourth-generation cockpit chip, the SA8295P.
The 8295 chip offers about 2x CPU computing power, 3x GPU computing power, and 8x AI computing power compared to the previous generation 8155 chip, Nio previously said.
