The first MPV model D9 from BYD's joint venture with Mercedes-Benz Group - previously known as Daimler AG - has officially gone on sale in China, after pre-sales began three months ago.
The Denza D9 offers a choice of two power forms, including a hybrid version using BYD's DM-i system and an all-electric version.
The hybrid version is offered in four options with a price range of RMB 329,800 ($48,100) to 439,800, slightly lower than the previous pre-sale price range of RMB 335,000-445,000, Denza said at Tuesday night's launch event.
The all-electric version of the Denza D9 is offered in three options, up from two in the pre-sale, with a price range of RMB 389,800 to RMB 459,800.
In addition, the Denza is also available in a limited founding edition priced at RMB 660,000.
As one of the few options for new energy MPVs in the Chinese market, the Denza D9 has achieved good initial results.
A few hours after the Denza D9 began pre-sales on May 16, Danza announced that the model had received over 3,000 pre-orders in 30 minutes. On June 16, the company said it had more than 20,000 pre-orders for the D9.
Late yesterday evening, after Denza began allowing users to officially order the model, the company announced that the D9 had received 10,206 non-refundable orders in one hour.
The Denza D9 is a premium new energy MPV with a length, width and height of 5,250 mm, 1,960 mm and 1,920 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 3,110 mm.
The hybrid version uses BYD's 1.5T Xiaoyun engine and consumes as little as 5.9 L of fuel per 100 km on low charge. This version supports 80 kW DC fast charging, with a charging time of 25 minutes from 30 percent to 80 percent.
The hybrid version of the Denza D9 has three maximum NEDC ranges of 945 km, 970 km and 1040 km on full fuel and full charge.
The pure electric version is equipped with a 103-kWh battery pack and has a maximum NEDC range of 620 km.
Unlike regular electric vehicles that offer only one fast charging port, the all-electric Denza D9 has two. Denza said it is the first automaker in the world to do so.
This allows the model to reach a maximum charging power of 166 kW and get a range of 230 km in 15 minutes.
This means that the all-electric Denza D9 can be charged with two chargers at the same time if the one next is idle.
Denza is a joint venture established in February 2011 by BYD and Daimler, with each holding a 50 percent stake, the first Sino-foreign joint venture in China to focus on NEVs. In February 2022, the Daimler brand was rebranded as Mercedes-Benz.
In an announcement at the end of January 24, BYD said that it and Daimler would increase their capital in Denza by RMB 1 billion each in monetary terms, and that the increase would not change the current shareholding of the two.
In a separate announcement on January 24, BYD said it signed an equity transfer agreement with Daimler regarding Denza, which will increase BYD's stake in the company to 90 percent and reduce Daimler's stake to 10 percent.
While making the D9 official, Denza also said yesterday that the brand plans to build 267 directly operated sales stores in 117 cities in China by the end of this year.
Like many of the current new car makers, Denza's stores will come in different sizes, including three types of stores - Denza Center, Denza Mini and Denza Experience Store.
