A 10-MWh sodium-ion battery energy storage station has been put into operation in Guangxi, southwest China, the country's first large-scale energy storage plant using sodium batteries.

The joint venture is 51 percent owned by BYD's battery unit FinDreams, with local conglomerate Huaihai holding the remaining 49 percent.

In a recent wide-ranging interview with CnEVPost, a CATL spokesperson talked about the company's overseas partnership model and its layout for new technologies.

The sodium-ion battery-equipped model has a battery pack capacity of 23.2 kWh, a CLTC range of 230 km, and can be charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in 20 minutes.

BYD has started construction on its sodium-ion battery facility in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province, with a total investment of RMB 10 billion and a planned annual capacity of 30 GWh.

The two models feature sodium-ion batteries from Farasis Energy and Hina Battery, marking a step closer to large-scale use of the new, lower-cost batteries.

The planned annual capacity of Zoolnasm's manufacturing facility includes 20 GWh of sodium-ion battery cells and 10 GWh of sodium-ion battery systems.

The customer is a globally recognized automaker headquartered in Germany with a portfolio of well-known car brands, Transimage said.

BYD will set up a joint venture with a local conglomerate to build a sodium-ion battery production base in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province.
