Tesla's share of the NEV market in China was 14.12 percent in March and 20.02 percent in the BEV market.

This was up 27 percent from February, but below the CPCA's estimate of around 560,000 units announced in late March.

With consumers in a wait-and-see mood, orders and transaction rates did not increase significantly, and auto demand recovered less than expected, the CADA said.

In the first quarter, Tesla sold 229,322 China-made vehicles, contributing 54 percent of its global deliveries in the quarter.

In the past five weeks, Nio vehicles had 11,929 insurance registrations. The company delivered 10,378 vehicles in March.

In the first quarter, wholesale sales of new energy passenger vehicles in China are expected to be 1.48 million, up 25 percent year-on-year, the CPCA said.

Tesla's first-quarter deliveries were higher than BYD's 264,647 passenger BEVs, but lower than the latter's 552,076 NEVs, including PHEVs.

The Qin family of models sold a record 40,850 units in March, surpassing the Song family's 40,510 units to become the best-selling BYD model for the month.

In the first quarter, BYD sold 552,076 NEVs, up 92.81 percent year-on-year, but down 19.22 percent from the fourth quarter of last year.

In March, GAC Aion sold 40,016 vehicles, Leapmotor delivered 6,172 and Shenlan 8,568.
