BYD (HKEX: 1211) will introduce the Shark pickup to its Fang Cheng Bao product lineup this year, a move that will bring the hybrid model to the Chinese domestic market for the first time following its overseas roll-out.

Currently, the Shark pickup and the Racco mini-car are the only BYD models launched exclusively in overseas markets.

Xiong Tianbo, general manager of BYD's Fang Cheng Bao division, announced the plan at a launch event for the flash charging versions of the Bao 8 and Bao 5 models on May 13, without providing further details.

The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker launched the Shark in Mexico in May 2024, making it a rare instance of the company debuting a new model in an overseas market first rather than in its home market of China.

This is partly because current Chinese policies are unfriendly toward the use of pickup trucks in cities, leaving such vehicles as a niche market. In overseas markets, however, pickups represent a major category.

In October 2025, Li Yunfei, general manager of BYD's branding and public relations department, mentioned that the Shark pickup would eventually be launched in the Chinese domestic market.

The Shark pickup is built on BYD's DMO platform, where O stands for off-road and DM stands for dual mode.

The model is equipped with a dual-motor system capable of delivering over 430 horsepower. It can sprint from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 5.7 seconds and offers a combined New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) range of 840 kilometers.

The Shark sold 4,500 units in overseas markets in April, bringing the cumulative total for the first four months to 11,804 units, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

Among domestic automakers, GWM (HKEX: 2333) has a massive pickup truck business.

Geely Auto (HKEX: 0175) unveiled the Radar brand and its first model, the RD6 electric pickup, in July 2022. The model was launched in China in October 2022 and has already entered multiple overseas markets.

In addition to the Shark pickup, BYD debuted an electric mini K-Car named BYD Racco in Japan in October 2025, which is scheduled to hit the market there in the summer of 2026.

The Racco marks BYD's second new model tailored exclusively for overseas markets, and it is unlikely to be available in China in the short term.

BYD prefers to operate the factories independently rather than through joint ventures.
