Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) has established its first European R&D center in Munich, Germany, bolstering its presence in a key export market.
The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker announced on the opening day of the IAA Mobility auto show in Munich that its first European R&D center will officially open soon, marking Xpeng's ninth globally.
Centered on the principle "In Europe, With Europe," the facility aims to uncover local user needs, accelerate technological innovation, and drive localization, Xpeng said.
The Munich facility will synergize with the company's R&D centers in Silicon Valley and San Diego, Xpeng noted. The company also operates R&D centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou in China.
The Munich center enables Xpeng to directly listen to European users and translate their needs into innovations, said Brain Gu, vice chairman and co-president of the company, during a press briefing.
The move extends Xpeng's R&D capabilities and demonstrates the company's commitment to global expansion, Gu said.
At IAA Mobility, Xpeng showcased five models including the next-generation P7 sedan, the 2025 G6 SUV, the 2025 G9 SUV, the X9 MPV, and the P7+.
The company also showcased its humanoid robot Iron, flying car, Land Aircraft Carrier prototype, and SEPA (Smart Electric Platform Architecture) at the event.
Xpeng aims to launch mass-produced vehicles with Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities by 2026 and begin robotaxi pilot operations in China, the company said, reiterating plans mentioned during last month's earnings call.
Its Turing AI smart driving system has commenced global adaptation, targeting worldwide user availability by the fourth quarter of 2026.
Xpeng entered the Norwegian market in 2021, marking its official entry into Europe. To date, it has expanded into 46 countries and regions globally.
