Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) Shanghai Megafactory will be equipped with an energy storage system that will store green power like a "giant power bank" and supply power when needed.

The distributed photovoltaic power generation and energy storage system project for the Megafactory has been confirmed to be constructed by a subsidiary of Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group, with plans to be completed by the end of this year, according to a report by local media outlet Shanghai Observer yesterday.

This is the first such large-scale project in Shanghai, featuring a 6-MW photovoltaic power generation system and an 8-MWh energy storage system, according to the report.

All of its energy storage units will use Tesla's Megapack electrochemical energy storage system produced at the Shanghai Megafactory.

The electricity generated by the photovoltaic system will be directly supplied to the Megafactory, with excess power automatically stored in the Megapack for future use.

This is like equipping the Tesla Shanghai Megafactory with a "giant power bank," the report noted.

The system can absorb 100 percent of the clean energy it generates, helping the factory smooth out its electricity load and serve as an emergency backup, the report said.

Tesla began construction of the Shanghai Megafactory on May 23, 2024, marking its first energy storage project outside the United States.

The factory is located in the Lingang area of Pudong, Shanghai, which is also the site of Tesla's EV factory in China.

Lingang Group is the first customer for the Megapack in China and signed an agreement with Tesla for the first batch of orders at the groundbreaking ceremony in May last year.

Tesla's energy storage products include the Powerwall, Powerpack, and Megapack. The Shanghai Megafactory primarily produces the Megapack, an ultra-large commercial energy storage battery, for the global market.

The Megafactory's annual production capacity for Megapacks is 10,000 units, with a storage capacity of nearly 40 GWh, Tesla said previously.

The Megapack is a powerful battery capable of storing and supplying energy, helping to stabilize the grid and prevent power outages. The 40 GWh capacity is sufficient to power 50,000 households in Shanghai for a year.

The first Megapacks made in Shanghai set sail today for export to Australia.
