BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has entered the Benin passenger car market, further expanding its footprint in Africa.
The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker officially announced its entry into the West African nation's auto market at a brand launch event with local distributor CFAO Group in the city of Cotonou on April 24, according to an announcement today.
BYD launched the Yuan Plus SUV (sport utility vehicle), and the compact hatchback Seagull, both battery electric vehicle (BEV) models to local consumers at the event.
BYD and CFAO unveiled an after-sales service center and showroom in Cotonou, according to the announcement.
The entry into the Benin market marks the further development of BYD's business in the African region, said Yao Shu, BYD's director of automotive sales in Africa.
Up to now, BYD has entered 16 countries and regions in Africa, according to the company.
In the past year, BYD introduced some of its models in Tunisia, Ecuador, Madagascar, and Ethiopia.
BYD ceased production and sales of vehicles powered entirely by internal combustion engines in March 2022, switching to focus on the production of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and BEVs.
The company sold 377,420 NEVs in March, up 24.78 percent year-on-year and up 16.90 percent from February, according to figures it announced on April 1.
It sold a record 72,723 vehicles overseas in March, up 89.22 percent year-on-year and up 8.50 percent from February.
