Geely Auto has rolled out yet another hybrid model under its Galaxy lineup, following the launch of a new model just 2 days ago, as its competition with BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) intensifies.
The automaker today launched the Galaxy L7 EM-i plug-in hybrid SUV (sport utility vehicle), powered by the fuel-economy-focused Leishen EM-i hybrid system it unveiled last October.
The Galaxy L7 EM-i is available in four variants with starting prices of RMB 119,800 ($16,490), RMB 129,800, RMB 139,800 and RMB 152,800 respectively.
Geely is offering a limited time discount of RMB 4,000 on all variants of the model, available on and before March 31.
After the discount, the starting prices of the four variants of the Galaxy L7 EM-i are RMB 115,800, RMB 125,800, RMB 135,800 and RMB 148,800 respectively.
The Galaxy L7 EM-i is an upgraded version of the Galaxy L7 that was launched on May 31, 2023, with the most significant changes being the Leishen EM-i hybrid system, and the Flyme Auto vehicle system.
The Leishen EM-i hybrid system was released on October 30 of last year, and was Geely's answer to BYD's DM-i system, which is known for its fuel economy.
On February 12, Geely launched the Galaxy L6 EM-i hybrid sedan with a starting price of RMB 89,800, the main competitor to the BYD Qin L DM-i.
The Galaxy L7 EM-i's main competitor is the Song Plus DM-i, a BYD hybrid SUV that currently has a starting price of RMB 135,800.
The Galaxy L7 EM-i measures 4,710 mm in length, 1,905 mm in width and 1,685 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,785 mm.
For comparison, the 2025 Song Plus DM-i measures 4,775 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width and 1,670 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,765 mm.
The Galaxy L7 EM-i is powered by a lithium iron phosphate battery pack with two capacity options -- 18.4 kWh and 18.7 kWh -- and a CLTC battery range of 115 kilometers.
Galaxy is a new product array officially launched by Geely Auto on February 23, 2023, to target the mainstream plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) markets.
The launch of two new models in one week comes at a time when the competition between Geely and BYD has intensified.
For the full year 2024, BYD has the largest share of China's auto market at 16.2 percent with retail sales of 3,718,281 vehicles, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
Geely was second in the retail sales rankings in 2024 with 1,773,251 units sold and a 7.7 percent share.
In January of this year, Geely had a rare first place with 239,944 retail sales and 13.4 percent share. BYD was second with 200,242 units sold and an 11.2 percent share.
