Nio (NYSE: NIO) has begun offering rewards to encourage Internet users to provide it with tips on malicious online attacks against the brand in a ramped-up brand protection initiative.
The electric vehicle (EV) maker's legal department announced in a statement today that it is openly soliciting such tips and offering rewards ranging from RMB 10,000 to RMB 1 million ($140,000) for valid tips or evidence.
Below is a CnEVPost translation of the statement:

If you find any online accounts insulting and defaming Nio Inc and its brands Nio, Onvo and Firefly for the purpose of obtaining traffic or other unlawful interests, or creating and spreading malicious negative information in an organized manner, you can provide us with clues and evidence. The tip submission email address is nioreport@nio.com.
For clues or evidence that are recognized as valid after verification, we will reward the provider with RMB 10,000 to RMB 1 million depending on its importance.

Yesterday, Nio founder, chairman, and CEO William Li mentioned in a live video on short video platform Douyin that the company continued to combat cyber violence and attacks against it.
"Regarding malicious rumors on the internet, it is very difficult to get evidence," Li admitted. As a result, Nio is hoping web users will provide it with tips.
Li said yesterday that it would be more lucrative to give tips to Nio if there were people in the audience whose job was to discredit Nio for other companies.
Some local companies have previously taken similar action, as the rise of self-media over the past few years has given everyone the opportunity to become influential.
BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) began taking similar actions more than 3 years ago, announcing on December 28, 2021 that it was offering rewards ranging from RMB 50,000 to RMB 1 million for tips on maliciously discrediting it.
On June 1, 2022, BYD announced that it increased the cap on the reward to RMB 5 million for a period of one year.
