BYD Changzhou is the second BYD vessel to be named after the city where its production base is located after BYD Hefei, and the third in its fleet.
A new BYD car carrier, BYD Changzhou, was launched in Yantai, Shandong province in eastern China, marking the third in the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker's fleet.
A semi-official Weibo account, @小迪快报, announced the development today, saying that BYD Changzhou is the second BYD vessel after BYD Hefei to be named after the company's production base.
Changzhou is a city in Jiangsu province in eastern China where BYD has a production site, its fourth passenger car plant.
Construction of the production facility began in 2019 and it went into operation in January 2022, producing BYD models including the Yuan Plus and Seal, according to an article on the city government's website.
Additional information about the BYD Changzhou vessel is currently unavailable.
BYD plans to put more car carriers into service, as it has quickly become China's largest NEV maker over the past few years.
On January 15, BYD announced that its first car carrier, BYD Explorer No.1, completed loading vehicles at Yantai Port in Shandong province and Xiaomo Port in Shenzhen and set sail.
BYD Explorer No.1 is not owned by BYD; it was built by CIMC Raffles, a subsidiary of state-owned China International Marine Containers (CIMC), for international shipping company Zodiac Maritime.
BYD would have seven other ro-ro vessels in operation over the next two years, the company said in January.
On September 21, Guangzhou Shipyard International Co Ltd announced that it held a undocking ceremony for BYD Hefei, a 7,000-vehicle dual-fuel automobile ro-ro vessel it built for BYD.
BYD Hefei is BYD's first vessel as shipowner and its first vessel named after the city where a production base is located.
BYD sold 2,747,875 NEVs from January to September, up 32.13 percent year-on-year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
It sold 297,881 NEVs overseas during the period, up 104.70 percent year-on-year, contributing 10.84 percent of all sales.
