Nio (NYSE: NIO) brings its new ES8, based on the NT 2.0 platform, to Europe as it continues to advance its commitment to serving local customers despite new tariff threat.

The model, known in Europe as the EL8, went on sale in Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark on June 13, according to a statement from the company today.

It is the sixth model Nio has launched there since entering the European market, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker said.

Since entering the European market in 2021, Nio has also launched the ET7, EL7, ET5, ET5T, and EL6 there, it said.

The EL series models are the ES series in China and were renamed in Europe due to a lawsuit with Audi.

As of today, Nio has 43 battery swap stations in Europe, which have provided a cumulative 65,254 services, according to the company.

Nio also has 45 superchargers in Europe and access to more than 600,000 third-party charging piles, it said.

Nio unveiled plans to enter Norway in May 2021 and began deliveries of the ES8, based on the NT 1.0 platform, at the end of September of the same year. It then expanded its European presence to four additional countries.

The company launched the new ES8 in China at Nio Day 2022 on December 24, 2022, marking the transition to the NT 2.0 platform for its first production vehicle.

On February 22 this year, Nio launched its 2024 models in China, and the ES8 received improvements including a cockpit chip upgrade.

In Europe, Chinese EV makers are facing greater uncertainty, though Nio is sticking to its local expansion.

On June 12, the European Commission announced that it would impose provisional anti-subsidy tariffs on EVs from China starting July 4. These new tariffs will be in addition to the current 10 percent levies.

Different car companies face different tariffs, with Nio facing an additional 21 percent weighted average tariff, CnEVPost has learned.

Nio later said that said it strongly opposes the additional tariffs and emphasized that its commitment to Europe remains unwavering.
