's pace of building battery swap stations was slow at the start of the year, possibly waiting for fourth-generation station capacity to ramp up. It's aiming to end the year with a total of more than 3,310 stations.

Nio (NYSE: NIO) today added a new battery swap station in Guangzhou, bringing the total number of the facility in China to 2,400, according to information posted on its mobile app.

To date, the electric vehicle (EV) maker's battery swap network has accumulated about 41.74 million services, according to its charging map.

Of its 2,400 battery swap stations, 789 are located along highways.

The company also has 2,179 supercharging stations in China offering 10,028 chargers, and 1,556 destination charging stations offering 11,800 stalls.

Nio started the year building battery swap stations at a slow pace, adding a total of 84 stations so far this year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

This could be because the company is waiting for the capacity of the new generation of stations to ramp up so that site resources can be used to build newer battery swap stations.

Nio unveiled the fourth-generation battery swap station at its Nio Day 2023 event on December 23, 2023, which will be equipped with 23 battery compartments and will increase the capacity to 480 services in a single day with a reduction of 22 percent in the time taken for each service.

This fourth-generation station will feature four Nvidia Orin X chips with six ultra-wide angle LiDARs and an overall computing power of 1,016 Tops.

The configuration allows these sites to more easily handle complex environments, opening up the possibility for more of their connected vehicle experiences, the company said at the time.

Nio plans to continue adding 1,000 battery swap stations in China in 2024, as it did last year, bringing the total to more than 3,310, it said at the Nio Day 2023 event.

In addition to the announcement of reaching 2,400 battery swap stations, Nio today said it completed coverage of the Great Wall with its battery swap network.

The route started from Dandong in Liaoning in the east to Yumen in Gansu in the west, spanning 25 cities.

Nio deployed 88 charging and battery swap stations along the 5,199-kilometer route, an average of one every 59 kilometers, it said.

In Europe, Nio currently has 42 battery swap stations, with Germany having the most with 14.
