Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) sold 74,073 China-made vehicles in September, of which 30,566 were exported, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The US electric vehicle (EV) maker has a plant in Shanghai that produces the Model 3 and Model Y, delivering to local customers as well as serving as an export hub.

The latest figures from the CPCA mean that Tesla delivered 43,507 vehicles in China in September, down 43.94 percent year-on-year and down 32.75 percent from August.

Tesla's Shanghai factory's exports were up 453.53 percent year-on-year in September and up 57.03 percent from August.

Tesla's pattern is to produce cars for export in the first half of the quarter and for the local market in the second half, it previously said.

Of the 74,073 China-made vehicles Tesla sold in September, including exports, 53,249 were Model Y and 20,824 were Model 3, according to the CPCA.

Tesla's Shanghai factory exported 82,893 vehicles in the third quarter, up 22.37 percent year-on-year but down 8.45 percent from the second quarter.

In the January-September period, Tesla delivered 433,729 vehicles in China, up 36.33 percent year-on-year.

China's retail sales of passenger new energy vehicles (NEVs) were 746,000 units in September, according to the CPCA. This means that Tesla's share of China's NEV market was 5.83 percent last month, down from 9.04 percent in August.

Retail sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in China in September were 500,000 units and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) were 246,000 units, according to the CPCA.

This means that Tesla's share of the Chinese BEV market was 8.70 percent in September, down from 13.18 percent in August.
