For Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), it has become common to recall vehicles and provide fixes via OTA updates.
The electric vehicle (EV) maker is recalling a total of 107,293 China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles with production dates between October 19, 2021 and April 26, 2022, effective May 23, 2022, according to an announcement released today on the official website.
The central processor of the infotainment system may not be sufficiently cooled when preparing for or during DC fast charging in some of the vehicles included in the recall, according to the announcement.
This can cause the central processor to slow down and the central touch screen to display sluggishly, and in severe cases the central processor may reboot and cause the display to fail.
When the fault occurs, the reverse image, windshield function settings, driving gear display and indicators will not work properly, in extreme cases will increase the risk of vehicle collisions, the announcement said.
Tesla will upgrade the recalled vehicles to 2022.12.3.3 or subsequent versions of the software for free through OTA technology.
The upgraded vehicles will mitigate the rise in central processor temperature when preparing for DC fast charging or during DC fast charging to prevent it from slowing down or restarting, according to the announcement.
For vehicles that are unable to implement the recall via OTA, Tesla will contact the relevant users to upgrade the software for the vehicles free of charge to eliminate safety hazards.
This comes less than 20 days after Tesla last announced a recall plan, and it conducted two recalls in April.
Tesla China was recalling a total of 127,785 imported and China-made Model 3 vehicles with production dates between January 11, 2019, and January 25, 2022, starting April 7.
These vehicles may have minor manufacturing differences in the rear motor inverter power semiconductor components, some of which may cause the rear inverter to malfunction after a period of use, causing the inverter to fail to control the current properly, according to an announcement on the SAMR website at the time.
Tesla will upgrade the motor control software for the recalled vehicles free of charge through OTA technology.
For vehicles that cannot be recalled via OTA, Tesla will upgrade the motor control software to closely monitor the vehicle's rear motor inverter and promptly replace the rear inverter with the relevant fault at no charge.
On April 29, Tesla began recalling a total of 14,684 imported and China-made Model 3 Performance electric vehicles with production dates between January 12, 2019 and March 25, 2022.
Due to software reasons, the vehicles in the scope of this recall show only the speed value in the speed area of the central touch display in track mode and lack speed units (KM/H), according to the SAMR's announcement.
