Chery to detail solid-state battery tech for 1st time

  • Chery plans to publicly unveil its solid-state battery achievements for the first time at its upcoming "Battery Night," aiming to redefine EV driving range.
  • Having showcased a solid-state battery module in October 2025, Chery expects the technology to enable vehicles to achieve a range of over 1,200 kilometers.

Chery will make its first public announcement regarding significant R&D breakthroughs in the solid-state battery sector, as the Chinese automaker prepares to host a technology showcase on March 18.

The Wuhu, Anhui-based company announced on Tuesday that it will hold the battery launch event on Wednesday, seeking to consolidate its position in the fiercely competitive global new energy vehicle (NEV) industry.

With advantages such as high energy density, superior safety, and a long lifespan, solid-state batteries are emerging as the key next-generation power battery technology to eliminate range anxiety and reshape the user experience, Chery wrote in a WeChat post today.

Chery initiated its strategic layout for all-solid-state battery technology several years ago. The upcoming Battery Night will showcase the company's achievements in solid-state cells, system integration, and supply chain development, according to the post.

While Chery did not disclose further details, it previously exhibited its all-solid-state battery technology, dubbed "Rhino S," at an innovation conference in October 2025. This technology boasts a cell energy density of up to 600 Wh/kg, about three times that of mainstream battery cells.

The breakthrough in high energy density is designed to allow vehicles to achieve a driving range of 1,200 to 1,300 kilometers on a single charge.

Chery said at the time that the battery had passed extreme safety tests, including nail penetration and drilling, and it plans to begin the first batch of on-vehicle verifications in 2027.

At the upcoming event, Chery will detail the safety technology architecture of the Rhino battery and demonstrate the safety results verified through actual testing in various extreme scenarios.

Several Chinese automakers have previously announced their progress in solid-state batteries, with many aiming to verify the technology in prototype vehicles by the end of this year.

Geely Auto announced in January that it will complete the production of its first in-house developed all-solid-state battery pack this year and proceed with on-vehicle verification.

Changan Automobile said last month that its Jinzhongzhao solid-state battery project is progressing steadily, with plans to install and verify the batteries in robots and vehicles by the third quarter of this year.

Battery manufacturers, however, remain relatively conservative. The world's largest power battery makers, CATL and BYD, both aim to begin small-scale production of all-solid-state batteries in 2027.
