German luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz is recalling tens of thousands of electric vehicles (EVs) in China, marking the latest recall case stemming from battery issues.
Beijing Benz, Mercedes-Benz's joint venture in China, is recalling 19,481 locally produced EQA and EQB vehicles manufactured between April 1, 2021, and March 12, 2024, according to an announcement today on China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) website. The recall will commence on June 25, 2026.
Due to variations in the high-voltage battery production process, the reliability of these vehicles' batteries has decreased. Additionally, the control strategy of the existing battery management system software may cause individual battery cells to bear excessive loads, the announcement said.
This increases the risk of internal short circuits, potentially leading to vehicle fires and posing safety hazards, the announcement said.
The recall is being conducted under SAMR's defect investigation. Beijing Benz will replace the high-voltage batteries in affected vehicles through authorized dealers.
Prior to the formal recall implementation, Beijing Benz advises owners to limit charging to no more than 80% capacity and park vehicles outdoors.
The recall expands upon a March 28, 2025 recall that covered 12,308 domestically produced EQA and EQB vehicles.
The EQA and EQB are two electric SUV (sport utility vehicle) models from Mercedes-Benz.
Earlier this week, Zeekr announced plans to recall 38,277 vehicles due to thermal runaway risks in the power battery, effective March 6, 2026.
