Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO, HKG: 9866) opened its first distributor store in Hungary as the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker continues to advance its European operations.
The Nio AutoWallis Showroom in Budapest opened on January 22 local time, marking a significant milestone for Nio in Hungary, the company announced Monday.
With the new showroom's inauguration, AutoWallis officially commences sales and service operations for Nio and Firefly vehicles in Hungary.
This will help further solidify Nio's footprint in the central European market, bringing premium smart electric mobility to more Hungarian users, the company said.
Currently, Hungarian customers can experience and purchase four Nio models: the Nio ET5, Nio ET5 Touring, Nio EL6, and Nio EL8. The EL6 and EL8 correspond to the ES6 and ES8 models sold in China.
Firefly's sole model, the Firefly EV, is also displayed in the showroom.
On the opening day of the showroom, Nio delivered its first vehicle in Hungary — a Nio EL8.
Nio entered the European market in 2021, with Norway as its first stop. It initially adopted a direct sales model in Europe, aiming to replicate its service model from China overseas.
However, this proved challenging. Over the past two years, the company began shifting toward a more asset-light model relying on national distributors.
In Hungary, Nio operates a battery swap station assembly plant to support its European site deployment. The plant saw its first battery swap station roll off the production line in September 2022.
