Nio (NYSE: NIO) announced today that it will move its annual flagship event, Nio Day, to the fall instead of the end of the year as in previous years.
This marks the first major adjustment to the timing of Nio Day in eight years, as the company begins to place greater emphasis on the cost-effectiveness of the event.
The company has already commenced preparations for Nio Day 2025 and said that it will launch the third-generation ES8 SUV (sport utility vehicle) at the event.
Below are some key facts about past Nio Day events.
Nio Day 2017
On December 16, 2017, Nio held its first Nio Day event in Beijing. The event sparked widespread discussion due to its massive expenditure, with Nio reportedly spending RMB 80 million ($11.2 million) on the event.
Nio unveiled its first mass-produced model, the ES8, along with its Nio Power charging system centered on battery swap.
The company also unveiled its driving assistance system, Nio Pilot, and virtual voice assistant, Nomi.
Nio Day 2018
On December 15, 2018, Nio held Nio Day 2018 in Shanghai, its second Nio Day event.
At the event, Nio rolled out its second production vehicle, the ES6, a more affordable SUV that later became the mainstay of Nio's sales.
On May 24, 2023, Nio launched the new ES6 based on the NT 2.0 platform. In February 2024, Nio launched the 2024 ES6, followed by an updated version in May of this year.
Nio Day 2019
On December 28, 2019, Nio hosted Nio Day 2019 in Shenzhen.
At the event, the company launched the new ES8 with 188 upgrades and debuted the coupe SUV EC6.
The price of the EC6 was not disclosed at the time but was announced several months later in July 2020.
Nio also unveiled a 100-kWh long-range battery pack at the event.
Nio Day 2020
On January 9, 2021, Nio held Nio Day 2020 in Chengdu, Sichuan.
This was the first time Nio held Nio Day at the beginning of the following year due to Covid-19 prevention measures.
Chengdu was selected as the event location through a vote by Nio community users, marking the first time Nio had done so, a practice that continues to today.
At Nio Day 2020, Nio launched the ET7, its first sedan and the first model based on the NT 2.0 platform.
The company also unveiled a 150-kWh semi-solid-state battery pack and the second-generation battery swap station.
Nio Day 2021
On December 18, 2021, Nio held Nio Day 2021 in Suzhou, Jiangsu province.
Nio unveiled the ET5 -- its second sedan -- and announced its strategy for entering global markets.
Nio Day 2022
On December 24, 2022, Nio held Nio Day 2022 in Hefei, Anhui province, where two of its vehicle assembly plants are located.
At the event, Nio launched two new models: the EC7 coupe SUV and the all-new ES8.
Nio Day 2023
On December 23, 2023, Nio held Nio Day 2023 in Xi'an, Shaanxi province.
The company unveiled its flagship sedan, the ET9, and began pre-sales at a price of RMB 800,000.
At Nio Day 2023, Nio also unveiled its in-house developed autonomous driving chip, the Shenji NX9031, which has been used in the ET9, ES6, EC6, ET5, and ET5 Touring.
Nio Day 2024
On December 21, 2024, Nio held Nio Day 2024 in Guangzhou, Guangdong province.
The ET9 was officially launched at Nio Day 2024, with a starting price of RMB 788,000 including the battery pack. Deliveries of the ET9 began in late March of this year.
Nio also launched the Firefly brand, targeting the premium compact car market to compete with Mini and Smart.
Firefly's first model, named after the brand, was launched in April 2025 with a starting price of RMB 119,800 including the battery pack. Deliveries of the model began in late April this year.
