Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) continued to see a decline in global deliveries last quarter, falling further behind BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) in the battery electric vehicle (BEV) market.
The US electric vehicle (EV) maker delivered 384,122 vehicles globally in the second quarter, below Wall Street's expected 389,407 vehicles, according to data released today.
Deliveries for the quarter decreased by 13.48 percent year-on-year, marking the second consecutive quarter of year-on-year decline. Compared to the first quarter, the figure increased by 14.09 percent.
Deliveries of the Model 3 and Model Y totaled 373,728 units in the second quarter, down 11.52 percent year-on-year but up 15.42 percent from the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Tesla produced 410,244 vehicles and deployed 9.6 GWh of energy storage products.
Tesla will report its second-quarter financial results after the market closes on Wednesday, July 23.
Tesla China's wholesale sales in June totaled 71,599 units, bringing the second-quarter total to 191,720 units, according to data released earlier today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
This means that vehicles produced at the Shanghai factory accounted for 49.91 percent of Tesla's global deliveries in the second quarter, up from 46.34 percent in the same period last year but down from 51.31 percent in the first quarter, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
Tesla China's second-quarter sales decreased by 6.82 percent from 205,747 units in the same period last year but increased by 10.98 percent from 172,754 units in the first quarter.
Tesla's continued decline in quarterly deliveries has further widened the gap between it and BYD.
In the second quarter, BYD's passenger BEV sales totaled 606,993 units, which was 222,871 units, or 58.02 percent, higher than Tesla's.
In the first quarter, BYD's passenger BEV sales exceeded Tesla's by 79,707 units, or 23.67 percent.
Tesla only produces BEVs, while BYD produces both BEVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).
BYD's passenger NEV sales in the second quarter, including BEVs and PHEVs, totaled 1,127,173 units, a year-on-year increase of 14.70 percent and a quarter-on-quarter increase of 14.31 percent.
