China's new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales saw year-on-year growth last month, returning to above 1 million units.
Passenger NEV retail sales totaled 1.021 million units in May, up 28.2 percent year-on-year and up 12.1 percent month-on-month, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
The figure is lower than the CPCA's preliminary data of 1,056,000 units released earlier this month but higher than its estimated data of 980,000 units released at the end of last month.
This marks the first time this year that China's passenger NEV retail sales have surpassed the 1 million unit mark.
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 607,000 units in May, representing a year-on-year increase of 22.6 percent and a month-on-month increase of 7.4 percent, according to the CPCA.
BEVs contributed 59.5 percent of total NEV retail sales in May, down from 61.8 percent in April.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), excluding extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), saw retail sales of 298,000 units in May, accounting for 29.2 percent of NEV retail sales. This represents a year-on-year increase of 32.3 percent and a month-on-month increase of 15.3 percent.
EREVs accounted for 116,000 units of retail sales in May, representing 11.4 percent of total NEV retail sales. That's a year-on-year increase of 51.5 percent and a month-on-month increase of 32.5 percent.
PHEVs and EREVs together accounted for 414,000 units of retail sales in May, representing a year-on-year increase of 34.1 percent and a month-on-month increase of 19.7 percent.
China's overall passenger vehicles, including sedans, SUVs (sport utility vehicles), and MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles), saw retail sales of 1.932 million units in May, up 13.3 percent year-on-year and up 10.1 percent month-on-month.
In May, the penetration rate of NEVs at retail reached 52.9 percent, up 6.2 percentage points year-on-year and up 1.4 percentage points month-on-month.
In May, the penetration rate of NEVs in retail sales for domestic brands was 74.6 percent, 25.0 percent for luxury brands, and 6.4 percent for mainstream joint-venture brands, according to the CPCA.
In May, China's wholesale sales of passenger NEVs reached 1.216 million units, up 33.0 percent year-on-year and up 7.0 percent month-on-month.
The NEV penetration rate in wholesale sales reached a record 52.6 percent in May, up 8.0 percentage points year-on-year and up 0.9 percentage points from April.
