Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) has unveiled a HUD (heads-up display) system developed jointly with tech giant Huawei, calling it the world's first HUD solution to integrate AI smart driving.

The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker unveiled the system at an event held today in Guangzhou, its headquarters city, marking a rare collaboration between the two companies, given their competition in multiple fronts.

Xpeng refers to the solution as AR-HUD, which projects an 87-inch display area onto the windshield, showing information including autonomous driving, speed, and road conditions.

Huawei provided the industry's leading AR-HUD hardware platform, ensuring that key metrics such as display clarity, brightness, and color performance meet top-tier standards, it said.

Xpeng, through its AI-driven autonomous driving algorithms, enables the AR-HUD to understand road conditions, predict behavior, and provide personalized display content.

The AR-HUD's display area boasts a brightness of up to 12,000 nits and a contrast ratio of 1,800:1, ensuring that the displayed content remains clearly visible in various environments.

With the technical support of Xpeng and Huawei, the display system can integrate AR information with the actual road, according to the company.

The system can display lane-level navigation, projecting the navigation screen directly onto the windshield.

When the smart driving system is activated, the HUD system can alert the driver about the vehicle's intentions.

The display system also offers enhanced safety features, such as automatically identifying the position of the vehicle ahead and lane boundaries in poor visibility conditions like rain or fog; it also provides warnings and prompts based on speed and road conditions when navigating curves.

The AR-HUD will first be used in the all-new G7 SUV (sport utility vehicle), Xpeng said.

Xpeng previewed the G7 in January, stating it could be the most competitive SUV in the RMB 250,000 ($34,810) price range this year.

Xpeng currently offers the G6 and G9 SUV models, both of which received upgrades in March.

Its other models include the Mona M03, P7+, P7i sedans, and the X9 MPV (multi-purpose vehicle).

The Xpeng G7 has the same wheelbase as Tesla's facelifted Model Y, with close and slightly larger overall dimensions. It is powered by LFP batteries supplied by CALB.
