CATL (SHE: 300750) has rolled out a new energy storage system called Tener Stack in a bid to consolidate its position in the sector.

The Chinese battery giant launched the Tener Stack at the battery storage show in Munich, Germany, on May 7, calling it the world's first production-ready 9 MWh ultra-high-capacity energy storage system solution.

Tener Stack achieves breakthroughs in system capacity, deployment flexibility, safety and transportation efficiency, CATL said, according to an announcement.

This is CATL's new move in the energy storage space after the April 2024 release of Tener, an energy storage system with zero degradation for five years.

Tener is a standard 20-foot containerized energy storage system with a total capacity of 6.25 MWh, the highest energy in the world at the time.

Tener Stack utilizes CATL's high energy density cells, also capable of zero degradation in five years, according to the company.

Compared to a traditional 20-foot container system, Tener Stack offers a 45 percent increase in volume utilization and a 50 percent increase in energy density.

With a storage capacity of up to 9 MWh, the system can charge about 150 regular electric vehicles (EVs) or power an average German home for six years, according to CATL.

Deploying 800 MWh of storage capacity via Tener Stack requires nearly one-third fewer containers than a conventional 6 MWh system.

Additionally, land use efficiency can be increased by 40 percent, with an overall savings of 20 percent in power plant construction costs, according to CATL.

In order to meet the 36-ton legal weight limit for ground transportation in many countries, CATL has developed a "Two in One" modular design that keeps each half-height container under 36 tons to comply with transportation regulations in 99 percent of the world's markets.

This significantly reduces waiting times and special transportation costs by 35 percent, CATL said.

With a lower center of gravity and better flexibility, Tener Stack can easily handle transportation scenarios including bridges and country roads, according to the company.

Tener Stack features a three-layer insulation design that boosts fire resistance to two hours and can withstand a magnitude 9 earthquake and a magnitude 5 hurricane, according to CATL.

By the end of November 2024, CATL's energy storage system products were used in more than 1,700 projects worldwide, covering all climate zones with multiple operating environments, it said.

CATL is the world's largest manufacturer of EV batteries and its energy storage business is growing rapidly.

CATL's revenue was RMB 362.01 billion ($50 billion) in 2024, down 9.70 percent year-on-year, according to its annual report released in March.

Its power battery systems business generated revenue of RMB 253.04 billion in 2024, contributing 69.90 percent of total revenue, down from 71.15 percent in 2023.

The energy storage battery systems business generated revenue of RMB 57.29 billion in 2024, contributing 15.83 percent of total revenue, up from 14.94 percent in 2023.
