Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) retail sales in China declined further last month, as seasonal factors continued to take their toll, along with the new Model Y update.
Tesla China sold 30,688 vehicles in February, including 3,911 for export, data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed.
That means the US electric vehicle (EV) maker sold 26,777 vehicles in China's domestic market in February, down 11.16 percent from 30,141 in the same month last year, and down 20.55 percent from 33,703 in January, CnEVPost's calculations show.
The lower sales were partly due to the Chinese New Year holiday from January 28 to February 4, which disrupted industrial production and consumer activity.
Additionally, Bloomberg cited people familiar with the matter in a January 15 report as saying that Tesla planned to suspend part of its production lines in Shanghai, which make its revamped Model Y, for about three weeks during the Chinese New Year to better optimize its equipment.
Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that makes the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, both for deliveries to local customers and as an export hub for it.
Tesla's pattern is to produce cars for export in the first half of the quarter and for the local market in the second half, it previously said.
Exports from the Shanghai plant were down 87.06 percent in February from 30,224 a year earlier, and down 86.76 percent from 29,535 in January.
Tesla China's overall sales in February, including exports, were down 49.16 percent from 60,365 a year earlier and down 51.47 percent from 63,238 in January.
Including exports, Tesla China's wholesale sales of Model Y in February were 8,032 units, a decrease of 77.84 percent from 36,248 units in the same month last year and a decrease of 75.08 percent from 32,233 units in January.
Wholesale sales of Model 3, including exports, were 22,656 units, a decrease of 6.06 percent from 24,117 units in the same month last year and a decrease of 26.93 percent from 31,005 units in January.
China's February retail sales of passenger new energy vehicles (NEVs) were 686,000 units, up 79.7 percent year-on-year but down 7.8 percent from January, according to the CPCA.
Retail sales of BEVs in February were 427,000 units, up 94.4 percent year-on-year and essentially flat from January.
This means that Tesla contributed 3.90 percent of China's passenger NEV retail sales and 6.27 percent of BEV retail sales in February.
In the January-February period, Tesla's retail sales in China were 60,480 units, down 13.63 percent year-on-year.
Its Shanghai plant exported 33,446 units in January-February, down 45.87 percent year-on-year.
Tesla has received 200,000 orders in China for refreshed Model Y, report says
