- The software issues include reverse camera not displaying and steering assistance being limited.
- In August 2024, Tesla had recalled more than 1.68 million vehicles in China due to software issues.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) is once again conducting a massive recall in China due to software issues.
The US electric vehicle (EV) maker is recalling more than 1.2 million vehicles in China effective immediately, and the problems can be fixed with OTA (over-the-air) updates, according to a statement on the website of China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) today.
The recall includes 335,716 imported Model S, Model X and locally produced Model 3 and Model Y cars with production dates between July 16, 2023, and December 14, 2024.
The vehicles covered by this recall have a reverse current that can damage the power supply component on the main board of the vehicle's computer when it is started and ready to work.
This could cause the rearview camera to function abnormally, resulting in the reverse image not being displayed, which can affect the driver's field of vision when backing up and increase the risk of a vehicle crash, according to the statement.
Tesla will upgrade the software to version 2024.44.25.3 or later for vehicles covered by the recall, free of charge. For vehicles that cannot be upgraded via OTA technology, Tesla will contact the users to implement the recall.
For vehicles that are unable to resolve the issue through a software upgrade, Tesla will replace the vehicle's computer at no cost to the customer.
The recall also includes 871,087 locally produced Model 3, Model Y cars with production dates between January 3, 2022, and September 23, 2023.
These vehicles may have an electronic power steering system software issue that results in limited steering assistance, causing the electronic power steering to malfunction, according to the statement.
Tesla will address the issue by upgrading the software for the vehicles to version 2023.38.9 or later.
This is Tesla's latest recall in China, though not the largest.
Last August, Tesla recalled a total of 1,683,627 locally produced production Model 3 and Model Y cars, as well as imported Model S and Model X vehicles with production dates between October 15, 2020, and July 17, 2024 in China.
Some of the vehicles in this recall may have a system that fails to detect the unlocked state of the frunk lid when it is unlocked, which could cause the frunk lid to lift off while the vehicle is in motion.
Tesla addressed the issue with an OTA update.
