Yangwang, the ultra-luxury brand of BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY), has seen its first delivery milestone for the U9 as it tries to carve out a piece of the supercar market.
As of today, cumulative deliveries of the Yangwang U9 reached 100 units, the brand announced on Weibo.
“This is a historic achievement reached for the first time by a Chinese supercar,” Yangwang said.
Yangwang officially launched the U9 on February 25, 2024, with only one version of the 2-seater model available at a starting price of RMB 1.68 million yuan ($230,870).
The U9 is the highest priced model under BYD's umbrella and one of the few supercars from a local Chinese brand.
The supercar market has an extremely small space, and Chinese brands have an even harder time entering it, considering the level of acceptance.
The supercar's powertrain delivers 1,306 Ps of horsepower and 1,680 Nm of power output, allowing the vehicle to sprint from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 2.36 seconds.
Deliveries of the U9 began in August last year, with seven units delivered in the first month, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
In the past four months, deliveries of the electric supercar have been 16, 17, 24 and 24, respectively.
Cumulative deliveries of the U9 stood at 88 units at the end of December 2024.
Yangwang is a sub-brand announced by BYD on January 5, 2023 to target the ultra-luxury market priced at the RMB 1 million level.
Its first model is the U8 off-road SUV (sport utility vehicle), which was officially launched on September 20, 2023, with a starting price of RMB 1.098 million.
The U8 has sold better than the U9, with monthly sales of a few hundred units in most months of the past year, considering it is also suitable for family use.
For the whole of 2024, the U8 delivered 7,366 units, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
Additionally, Yangwang began pre-sales of its other new model, the U7 sedan, at the 2024 Guangzhou auto show last November 15, with an official launch date yet to be determined.
Earlier today, Yangwang demonstrated in a video that the U7 can complete a maze game on the roof of the car under the control of a phone through the responsive DiSus-Z body control system.
