BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) gave the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV (sport utility vehicle) their debuts as the new energy vehicle (NEV) maker tries to capture more share of China's premium market.

The company introduced the Han L and Tang L, two new flagship models in its Dynasty lineup, at a design presentation today, targeting the premium market in the RMB 300,000 yuan ($40,930) class.

The Tang, which initially debuted at the 2014 Beijing auto show and began production in 2015, is one of BYD's main models in the mid-to-high-end market.

The Han was initially launched in July 2020 and was BYD's first effort in the mid- to high-end sedan market.

The current Han family models -- with a price range of RMB165,800 to RMB259,800 -- and Tang family models -- with a price range of RMB179,800 to RMB269,800 -- will continue to be sold after the launch of the Han L and Tang L.

The exact prices of Han L and Tang L were not announced today and are expected to be known at a new event in March.

Both models largely continue the design of their respective families, but the design language has been upgraded from the previous "Dragon Face" to the "Loong Face".

The upgrade may be largely due to the fact that Chinese authorities have changed the official English translation of the dragon from Dragon to Loong to emphasize the difference between the mythical creature in Chinese and Western cultures.

Han L

The Han L sedan measures 5,050 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width and 1,505 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,970 mm, which is larger than the 2025 Han, which measures 4,995 mm in length, 1,910 mm in width and 1,495 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,920 mm.

The Han L will be offered in battery electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variants, just like the current Han on sale.

The single-motor version of the Han L BEV has a peak power of 500 kW. The dual-motor version has peak power of 230 kW and 580 kW for the two motors and can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds.

Peak power of 580 kW from a single motor is rare. In the past few years, motors with a peak power of 300 kW have been uncommon.

The high-performance motor is just the “tip of the iceberg” of the new model's new technologies, with significant upgrades in many more areas, including the chassis and intelligent driving, said Lu Tian, head of sales for BYD's Dynasty lineup, at today's event.

The Han L PHEV is based on BYD's latest DM 5.0 hybrid technology and is powered by a 1.5T engine with a peak power of 115 kW.

The single-motor variant has a motor with a peak power of 200 kW, while the dual-motor variant has two motors with a peak power of 200 kW, and can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds.

Tang L

The Tang L measures 5,040 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width and 1,760 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,950 mm.

For comparison, the Tang currently on sale has a length, width and height of 4,870 mm, 1,950 mm and 1,725 mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,820 mm.

The Tang L features a three-row seating layout and like the Han L is offered in BEV and PHEV variants.

The SUV's BEV and PHEV variants share the same powertrain as their Han L counterparts and can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in as little as 3.9 seconds.
