BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has showed off the Sealion 07 EV in Japan, as it looks to bring the battery electric vehicle (BEV) model to more international markets.

The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker showcased the Sealion 07 EV at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2025 on January 10, it said yesterday.

The Sealion 07 EV will enter the Japanese passenger car market this year and will be BYD's fourth model in the Japanese market after the Yuan Plus, Dolphin and Seal.

In 2024, BYD sold 2,223 NEVs in the Japanese market, a year-on-year increase of 54 percent, surpassing the Japanese domestic brand Toyota's NEV sales there, according to the company.

BYD officially announced its entry into the Japanese passenger car market on July 21, 2022, the home turf of international automotive giants including Toyota and Honda.

The company launched the Atto 3 -- known in China as the Yuan Plus -- in January 2023 as its first passenger car in Japan.

In September 2023, the Dolphin compact electric vehicle was launched in Japan. In June 2024, the Seal electric sedan was launched in Japan.

BYD launched its new battery electric vehicle (BEV) technology platform, e-Platform 3.0 Evo, in China on May 10, 2024, along with its first model based on the platform, the Sealion 07 EV.

The Sealion 07 EV, a (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model Y competitor, has a starting price of RMB 189,800 yuan ($25,890) in China, with deliveries in the country starting the same month as the launch.

BYD has already begun bringing the all-electric SUV (sport utility vehicle) model to overseas markets.

On November 12, 2024, BYD officially launched the Sealion 07 EV in Europe at an event in Frankfurt, Germany, where the model was rebranded as the Sealion 7.

The model was launched in Norway on November 26 and in Thailand on November 28.
