CATL has launched new batteries under its commercial vehicle battery brand Tectrans, or Tianxing, to further expand its product matrix.

The Chinese power battery giant released its Tectrans series of batteries for heavy-duty commercial vehicles on November 25, offering a supercharging version, a long-life version, a long-range version, and a durable version for construction machinery.

Tectrans is the commercial vehicle battery brand launched by CATL on July 4, when the company introduced two Tectrans L-Series commercial vehicle batteries for the logistics industry, including a version that supports supercharging, and a long-range version.

On September 14, the company released the CATL Tectrans Bus Edition, which it said is its tailor-made solution for the electric bus industry.

The new Tectrans series of batteries, released yesterday, extends the brand's reach further into the heavy-duty commercial vehicle sector.

As the electrification of heavy commercial vehicles picks up speed, issues including short range, slow energy replenishment and rapid life decay have become key challenges that need to be addressed, CATL said at yesterday's launch event that was broadcast live.

CATL hopes to reshape the industry standard so that pure electric heavy commercial vehicles can break the boundaries of application scenarios and move towards full-scenario applications, the company said.

The Tectrans range of supercharging-enabled heavy commercial vehicle batteries has a peak supercharging capability of 4 C, capable of charging to 70 percent in 15 minutes.

C refers to the battery's charge multiplier, and 4 C theoretically means the battery can be fully charged in a quarter of an hour.

The battery has a long life of up to 1.2 million kilometers, with a maximum capacity of 600 kWh and a range of up to 500 kilometers.

In scenarios including mine transportation as well as sludge mixing, the battery can drastically reduce the charging time of electric heavy trucks and significantly improve operational efficiency, CATL said.

The long-life version of the battery has a 15-year, 3-million-kilometer lifespan and can cope with the pressure of battery degradation due to frequent charging and discharging in high-energy-consumption transportation scenarios such as heavy-duty, medium- and long-distance transportation, according to the company.

This version has a maximum range of 500 kilometers, which can meet the needs of different transportation tasks and can support battery swap business mode.

Heavy-duty vehicles equipped with the battery will be cheaper to use than conventional vehicles.

For example, for a heavy truck traveling 200,000 kilometers per year, a heavy commercial vehicle using the CATL Tectrans long-life battery could save more than RMB 1 million ($138,000) over eight years compared to a traditional fuel vehicle, the battery maker said.

The long-range battery supports a capacity of up to 1,000 kWh, allowing a range of up to 800 kilometers and widening the vehicle's service radius, CATL said.

Its energy density of 220 Wh/kg is the highest in the industry, CATL said.

The Tectrans battery for construction machinery enables mining trucks to remain highly safe after 500,000 kilometers, a four-fold increase in endurance strength compared to the industry's 100,000 kilometers.

The product is already in mass production and is used in over 20 models from eight construction machinery manufacturers, according to CATL.

From 2020-2023, CATL had topped the domestic heavy-duty truck battery installations for four consecutive years, with a 30 percent share in the construction machinery sector, according to the company.

CATL's power battery installed capacity in October was 25.32 GWh, continuing to lead with a 42.78 percent share, according to data released earlier this month by China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).
