The Yangwang U7 will be powered by BYD's second-generation blade battery, which will have a charging multiplier of more than 5.5 C and a discharging multiplier of more than 14 C, according to an auto blogger.
BYD's (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) next-generation blade battery will likely be the first to be installed in a new model from its premium sub-brand Yangwang.
The Yangwang U7 sedan will be powered by the second-generation blade battery, which will have a charging multiplier of more than 5.5 C and a discharging multiplier of more than 14 C, said Wu Ying, editor-in-chief of local automotive media Xchuxing, in a Weibo post today.
“Yangwang's friend told me that I can get ready to experience the Yangwang U7,” he wrote on Weibo, without mentioning more information.
C refers to the charging and discharging multiplier of the battery, and for charging, 5.5 C means that the battery can theoretically be fully charged in about 11 minutes.
For discharging, higher multiplier means higher supported power output. Xiaomi's (HKG: 1810, OTCMKTS: XIACY) SU7 Ultra is powered by CATL's second-generation Qilin Battery, which boasts 16 C or 1,330 kW of discharge power.
BYD released its first-generation blade battery in March 2020, and the lithium iron phosphate chemistry-based battery, which focuses on safety, is now used across the new energy vehicle (NEV) maker's entire model lineup.
BYD, the world's second-largest maker of power batteries, has not updated the battery in the past few years. Meanwhile, other players, including CATL, have launched several new battery products and put batteries with charging multiplier of up to 5 C into service.
On June 13, local media outlet 36kr cited a source close to BYD as saying that the company's second-generation blade battery could be launched in the second half of 2024, and that it also has a 6 C battery in the pipeline.
CATL plans to launch a power battery with a charge multiplier of 6 C in the second half of 2024, which would be the second generation of Qilin Battery, the report said.
CATL has yet to announce the official release of the second-generation Qilin Battery, but said yesterday that the SU7 Ultra prototype is equipped with the new battery.
The first-generation Qilin Battery was released in June 2022, when CATL said it was the world's most highly integrated battery.
Yangwang is a sub-brand announced by BYD on January 5, 2023 to target the ultra-luxury market priced in the RMB 1 million ($140,000) range, with the first model being the U8 off-road SUV (sport utility vehicle).
Yangwang said on January 10 that the brand's first sedan, named the U7, would have more than 1,000 horsepower and would be priced in the RMB 1 million range.
On January 15, the Yangwang U7 entered a regulatory filing catalog that showed its length, width and height at 5,265 mm, 1,998 mm and 1,517 mm, respectively, with a wheelbase of 3,160 mm.
The Yangwang U7 is powered by four permanent magnet synchronous motors, each with a peak power of 240 kW, according to the filing.
Yangwang gave the U7 sedan its debut on April 25, the first day of the 2024 Beijing auto show.
