The Seal 06 will have a combined range of over 2,000 kilometers and may consume less than 3 L per 100 kilometers at low charge, according to local media.

(BYD Seal 06 entered into a regulatory filing list in March 2024.)

BYD's new model, the Seal 06, will be the first to feature the fifth-generation DM-i hybrid system of the new energy vehicle (NEV) maker, local automotive media Yiche reported today.

The model will have a combined range of over 2,000 kilometers and is likely to consume less than 3 L per 100 kilometers at low charge as per NEDC standards, according to the report.

The report doesn't provide anything more on BYD's next-generation DM-i technology.

The Seal 06 has made it into a new model filing catalog published by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology last month, meaning it may not be too far from release.

The five-seater sedan measures 4,830 mm in length, 1,875 mm in width and 1,495 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,790 mm, according to the filing.

It has a total mass of 1,610 kilograms and a top speed of 180 km/h.

The model has an electric motor with a peak power of 120 kW and an engine with a displacement of 1,498 ml and 74 kW.

BYD sells both plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and they each contributed about half of BYD's 3.02 million NEV sales last year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

The company launched its DM (Dual Mode) hybrid technology platform in 2008 and rolled out the fourth generation of the DM platform in 2021, dividing the technology into the more performance-oriented DM-p and the more energy-consumption-oriented DM-i.

On March 11, local media outlet 36kr reported that BYD would spend three years fighting a "liberation battle" to accelerate its market share from traditional gasoline vehicles.

As part of the plan, BYD will update its DM hybrid system, as well as its all-electric platform e-Platform, according to the report.

The NEV maker will introduce its fifth-generation DM system, of which the DM-i branch enables the vehicle to consume as little as 2.9 L per 100 kilometers of fuel, and can travel close to 2,000 kilometers on a full tank of fuel and full charge, the report said.

On March 27, BYD chairman and president Wang Chuanfu said in an investor communication that the company will launch its fifth-generation DM hybrid technology in May, which will reduce fuel consumption to 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers on low charge and give the vehicle a range of up to 2,000 kilometers on a full tank of fuel and full charge.

As the current model is in short supply, BYD will gradually make the switch to the fifth-generation DM model in May based on market conditions, Wang said at the time.
