Deepal, the new energy vehicle (NEV) unit of Changan Automobile, today unveiled a new model, the G318, targeting the hardcore off-road SUV market.

The G318, Deepal's third model after the SL03 sedan and S7 SUV, is an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV).

The model measures 4,998 mm in length, 1,985 mm in width and 1,960 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,880 mm. It weighs 2,360 kg.

It is similar to some other hardcore crossover SUVs with a boxy exterior design.

The G318 is powered by Deepal's so-called super-extended-range powertrain, of which the single-motor version has a maximum power of 110 kW.

Its dual-motor version has a front motor with a maximum power of 131 kW and a rear motor with a maximum power of 185 kW for a total power of 316 kW, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds.

The model has a 1.5 T engine as a range-extender, and 1 L of gasoline generates more than 3.85 kWh of electricity, Deepal said.

The G318 has a CLTC battery range of up to 190 kilometers in urban driving and 155 kilometers in WLTC standards, according to the company.

Deepal offers five daily driving modes for the G318 including eco, comfort and sport, and five off-road driving modes including sow and sand.

Deepal did not announce the pricing of the model at today's launch, which is expected to be known at the official launch event in May.

The model is expected to compete with the Bao 5 SUV from 's (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) personalized brand Fang Cheng Bao, which went on sale on November 9 last year at a starting price of RMB 289,800 ($40,260).

Deliveries of the Bao 5 began on November 23 last year, with 626 units delivered in the first month, and 5,086 in December and 5,203 in January this year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

In February, Bao 5 deliveries were lower at 2,310 units, partly due to the Chinese New Year holiday.

Deepal, Changan's NEV brand announced in 2022, officially launched its first model, the SL03, on July 25, 2022, a competitor to the Model 3.

Deepal also has an SUV called the S7, a competitor to the Tesla Model Y.

Both the SL03 and S7 are available in EREV and battery electric vehicle (BEV) versions.

Deepal delivered 9,994 vehicles in February, up 143.58 percent year-on-year while down 41.36 percent from 17,042 in January.
